Thursday, August 16: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
A very young and beautiful Catherine Deneuve falls in love with an auto mechanic against her widowed mother’s wishes. The entire story is told through music by Michel Le Grande and is colorfully directed by Jacques Demy.

Thursday, September 20: Like Water for Chocolate (1992)
Tita is the youngest of three sisters who live near the border of the United States in early 20th century Mexico with her widowed mother. An old family tradition forbids Tita to marry because she must care for her over protective and domineering mother in her old age.

Thursday, October 18: Beauty and the Beast (1946 version)
Jean Cocteau directed this live action version of the ancient fairy tale 45 years before Disney’s animated hit. This French cinema classic tells the same story but in a very surrealistic and adult presentation.

Misc.
Now located in a transitional home of the historic Glenn Swetman House in Biloxi, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art offers free meeting space for community clubs and organizations. It is recommended that meetings be booked at least six weeks in advance. Donations are welcome, of course! For more information, contact Trish Lawrence, 374.5574, or studio@georgeohr.org.

Volunteers are also being sought to join the still-active corps of volunteers and docents at the museum. In particular, volunteers who enjoy working with school groups are sought to assist museum educators with the very popular Great Tile Project, which has now served over 1,500 students in the three coast counties, with almost 2,000 more youth scheduled for projects in the coming months. The first group of volunteers will be needed by mid-February. For more information, contact Holly Zinner, holly@georgeohr.org; or Sara Miller, cjjpjd@yahoo.com

Classes
July 18 OHR-O'KEEFE MUSEUM INTRODUCES EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM
The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art’s Education and Outreach program will be traveling this school year visiting schools in Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock counties offering hands-on clay projects for students grades k-12. The Education and Outreach program, sponsored by the Foundation for the Mid-South, is designed to enhance children’s knowledge about the art history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Since last year, the Outreach program has expanded the projects they offer.
For 2007, teachers will have the choice between fired or air-dried projects. The air dry clay projects will include pinch or coil pots, clay sculptures, imprinted tiles, or George Ohr masks. The fired clay projects will include pinch pots, press bowls, wind chimes, magnets, clay masks, or The Great Tile Project. The Great Tile Project has been an ongoing production at the
Ohr-O’Keefe Museum.

Due to costs, the museum will charge $2 per child for the fired projects; the air dry projects are free. Each project will be complete with an education piece about the history and pottery techniques of Biloxi potter, George Ohr.

Last year, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art’s Education and Outreach program reached over 6,000 students in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area. Sara Miller, Ohr-O’Keefe Educator, will be coordinating the program this year. Other representatives from the museum that will be visiting coast schools include Kathy Bristol, Morgan Hartman, and Chuck Comstock.

The Ohr-O’Keefe’s Museum of Art’s goal is to reach as many young people as possible with traditional art opportunities through the Education and Outreach program.

If you would like an information packet for your school or would like to schedule an outreach please contact: Sara Miller, Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, Education and Outreach Coordinator, outreach@georgeohr.org or 228-374-5547

Salvation Army of MS

The Salvation Army is seeking your assistance to support The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree and Red Kettle Holiday Fund-raising Campaign as we continue our efforts to help the Coast's six counties (George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River and Stone) get "back to normal".

This is an important and special program that benefits many local needy individuals. Each year The Salvation Army provides food for the hungry, companionship to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter for the disabled, and many more services.

We invite you to attend our 2007 Christmas Cheer (Angel Tree and Kettle) Kickoff on Wednesday, November 21st, 5:00 p.m. at Edgewater Mall, between Traditional Jewelers and Auntie Anne's. We will have a short program with WLOX featuring Christmas Carols and music.

We are also working with Edgewater Mall to provide a gift wrapping service which will be located by our Angel Tree display. We would be happy to wrap gifts for your annual Christmas party as well!

STOCKINGS - Seniors
We are providing Christmas stocking for Senior Citizens this year. If you would like to help, I will be happy to drop some off for you. Suggestions items to include: Gift cards, socks, stamps, cards, stationery, lotion, disposable razors, shaving cream, etc.

KETTLE
We are very happy to announce that this year you can go to http://www.onlineredkettle.org/ to donate and/or sponsor you own business and/or personal Kettle!!!
We are still signing up and need bellringers as well. Would it be possible to put these in employee areas so they can sign up as a Volunteer to ring bells for us? We are ringing at
all the area Walmarts, Edgewater, Diamondhead and several other locations.

ANGEL TREE DISTRIBUTION
Our dates to prepare for distribution are December 13th and 14th and we will be distributing Angel Tree gifts from December 17th through December 20th. We are in need of lunches being provided for our, usually about 75, Volunteers. (We do have commitments for lunch on December 13th and 19th. ) Please consider providing lunch for any of these dates.

May we count on you for bell ringer volunteers, adopting Angels, or a donation?

Thank you for your help!

Thanksgiving CoHR

The only reason I see a need to push the seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas is when people in need are involved. Last year, many organizations and people (myself included) got blind-sided by the holidays, scrambling to organize assistance.

So many of these survivors still don't have Christmas ornaments! No stockings, no money for presents for their children, nothing for Thanksgiving.

This year, many of us have been anticipating this and have begun our campaigns early. The following links are different examples of what people are doing, what some hope to have done, what some wish could be. If you are touched in anyway, please help. $10 buys a gift or 50 ornaments. $20 can buy a prelit Christmas tree. $50 buys Thanksgiving for at least a family of 4.

Lead Exposure

The following is an exerpt from a gov't report (MMWR).

If you are a volunteer, please consider getting your lead levels checked. If you are a resident, PLEASE consider getting your lead levels checked. If you have children, do not hesitate in getting their lead levels checked. If you are a volunteer, please consider donating a lead blood test to a resident in need.

Katrina stirred a lot of chemicals that have been dormant in the soil for years up to the surface.

Recommendations for Testing

CDC (102) and AAP (3) have recommended that health-care providers conduct blood lead tests on children enrolled in Medicaid and those identified as being at risk on the basis of the state or local screening plan or the risk assessment process. Federal policy requires that all children enrolled in Medicaid receive screening blood lead tests at ages 12 and 24 months and that blood lead screening be performed for children aged 36--72 months who have not been screened previously (103). Despite this, blood lead screening rates for Medicaid children have been low (<20%) href="http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/grants/contacts/CLPPP%20Map.htm">http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/grants/contacts/CLPPP%20Map.htm.

Targeted screening strategies enable clinicians to assess risks for individual children and recommend blood lead testing for a subset of children in the jurisdiction thought to be at increased risk for lead exposure. CDC recommends that risk evaluations be conducted on the basis of such factors as residence in a geographic area, membership in a group at high risk, answers to a personal-risk assessment questionnaire (which might include local factors such as cultural practices or products, such as herbal remedies, traditional cosmetics or imported spices), or other risk factors relevant to the jurisdiction (102).

CDC recommends that locally developed targeted risk assessment and blood lead screening strategies be applied at ages 1 and 2 years (102). Children aged 36--72 months who have been identified as being at risk and who have not been screened previously also should receive a blood lead test (102). For clinicians in areas that lack a state or local screening plan, CDC recommends that a blood lead test be performed on all children at ages 1 and 2 years and on children aged 36--72 months who have not been screened previously (102).

Because lead exposures might change with a child's developmental progress (e.g., walking or reaching window sills) or as a result of external factors (e.g., family relocation or home remodeling), two routine screenings are recommended (at approximately ages 1 and 2 years). Among children in Chicago at high risk with BLLs <10>10 µg/dL when tested again at age >2 years (103). This report does not change current CDC recommendations in ages for routine blood lead testing. However, certain local health departments (e.g., those in Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) recommend blood lead screening at younger ages or more frequently (106--108). For example, these departments recommend BLL testing starting at ages 6--9 months in high risk areas, blood lead testing at more frequent intervals (e.g., every 6 months) for children aged <2 years, or the provision of additional education and more rapid follow-up blood lead testing for children aged <12 months with BLLs 6--9 µg/dL.
