July 18 OHR O'KEEFE INTRODUCES OPEN STUDIO
Beginning Aug. 1, the Ohr O'Keefe Museum of Art will offer an open pottery studio Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for the public as well as current students of the museum. Also, the museum, at 1596 Glenn Swetman Drive in Biloxi, will now be open for visitors on Saturdays from 10-2.
The studio has seven wheels available. Artists must call and reserve a spot one week in advance. The museum will charge a $20 fee for studio use which includes one 4 hour day (not to be split) and later visits to trim and glaze works. Current museum students may use the studio for free,but must reserve a space. The museum will need a 48-hour notice for cancellations or re-scheduling.
Potters must bring clay or purchase it from the studio which is $30 for 25 pounds. Potters can use all studio materials including wheels, tools, kiln, and low-fire glazes. However, high-fire glazes must be brought in by potters.
Firing charges will apply to all pieces of work. Charges will depend on size of pieces, number of pieces, and types of glaze.

Poster Contest
OHR FALL FESTIVAL POSTER CONTEST OPEN TO AREA ARTISTS
The 14th Annual George Ohr Fall Festival of Arts is sponsoring a poster contest with a prize of $300. The contest is open to all artists 18 and over. The deadline is August 10, 2007, and entries may be mailed or delivered to the transitional location of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, 1596 Glenn Swetman Drive, Biloxi, MS 39530.
The work must be original and reference George Ohr in a creative fashion. Past posters for the fall festival sell rapidly in the museum gift shop, which still has an inventory of all but one or two posters.

Anna Harris, curator, give a “re-introduction” to the life and work of George E. Ohr in a gallery talk and slide show. Guests will have a chance to tour the exhibition Potter to the Push, the current display of Ohr pottery, with Harris while hearing about the development of Ohr’s innovative ceramic style.

The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is proud to announce the Mississippi Gulf Coast artists that have been accepted to be participants in the Diggin’ It 2007 Ohr Rising Gulf States Juried Competition;

Of the 150 entries, 60 original works were selected as participants and eight winners will be chosen. The competition was open to artists in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The winners will be revealed at the Diggin’ It opening reception on Aug. 24.
Scott Young a ceramist of San Juan Capistrano, CA, was elected as this year’s competition juror. “In my selection process, I looked at the presentation of each piece, the initial impression, the content or idea(s) present, the execution of skills and techniques used in fabrication and its spirit,” said Young.
The piece that receives the Mad Potter’s Award for Ceramics will be awarded $1000. Other awards include Ceramics Best in Show, All Media Best in Show, and five Juror’s Awards for all media.

A very young and beautiful Catherine Deneuve falls in love with an auto mechanic against her widowed mother’s wishes. The entire story is told through music by Michel Le Grande and is colorfully directed by Jacques Demy.
Thursday, September 20: Like Water for Chocolate (1992)
Tita is the youngest of three sisters who live near the border of the United States in early 20th century Mexico with her widowed mother. An old family tradition forbids Tita to marry because she must care for her over protective and domineering mother in her old age.
Thursday, October 18: Beauty and the Beast (1946 version)
Jean Cocteau directed this live action version of the ancient fairy tale 45 years before Disney’s animated hit. This French cinema classic tells the same story but in a very surrealistic and adult presentation.

Now located in a transitional home of the historic Glenn Swetman House in Biloxi, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art offers free meeting space for community clubs and organizations. Volunteers are also being sought to join the still-active corps of volunteers and docents at the museum. In particular, volunteers who enjoy working with school groups are sought to assist museum educators with the very popular Great Tile Project, which has now served over 1,500 students in the three coast counties, with almost 2,000 more youth scheduled for projects in the coming months. July 18 OHR-O'KEEFE MUSEUM INTRODUCES EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAM
The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art’s Education and Outreach program will be traveling this school year visiting schools in Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock counties offering hands-on clay projects for students grades k-12. The Education and Outreach program, sponsored by the Foundation for the Mid-South, is designed to enhance children’s knowledge about the art history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Since last year, the Outreach program has expanded the projects they offer.
For 2007, teachers will have the choice between fired or air-dried projects. The air dry clay projects will include pinch or coil pots, clay sculptures, imprinted tiles, or George Ohr masks. The fired clay projects will include pinch pots, press bowls, wind chimes, magnets, clay masks, or The Great Tile Project. The Great Tile Project has been an ongoing production at the
Ohr-O’Keefe Museum.
Due to costs, the museum will charge $2 per child for the fired projects; the air dry projects are free. Each project will be complete with an education piece about the history and pottery techniques of Biloxi potter, George Ohr.
Last year, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art’s Education and Outreach program reached over 6,000 students in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area. Sara Miller, Ohr-O’Keefe Educator, will be coordinating the program this year. Other representatives from the museum that will be visiting coast schools include Kathy Bristol, Morgan Hartman, and Chuck Comstock.
The Ohr-O’Keefe’s Museum of Art’s goal is to reach as many young people as possible with traditional art opportunities through the Education and Outreach program.

July 18 Weeklong Clay Workshop through Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art - October 1-5
The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art will sponsor a five-day clay workshop Oct. 1-5 at the studio of Brian Nettles in Pass Christian. There is a limit of six students for the workshop, and spaces are filling fast. Trish Lawrence, 228.374.5547 or studio@georgeohr.org, is keeping a waiting list for the workshop.
In this five-day intensive clay workshop, students will learn to discover personal forms by learning to use the potter’s wheel as a tool. They will learn to take basic cylinders from the potter’s wheel to the work table and push, pull, cut and stretch into functional pots for food use, paying special attention to handles, spouts, feet and lids.
This class is open to all serious students at all levels. The instructor, Brian Nettles, a studio potter has been working in clay for over twenty years. He received his BFA from the University of Southern Mississippi and continued his education studying in Japan. He has taught numerous workshops around the country and his work can be found in private and public collections around the world including the Mobile Museum of Art, The Tokoname Cultural Center, in Tokoname Japan, Mississippi Museum of Art, Key West Community College, Lauren Rogers Museum of Art,
Fee: $475 - $450 for Ohr-O’Keefe museum members
(Class size will be limited to six for more personal attention.)
This includes 50 pounds of clay and the work will be bisque fired.
(Glazing may be a possibility through Nettles Studios at a later date).
Location: Nettles Studios, Pass Christian, MS Situated in the middle of 30 beautiful acres, students will learn and observe nature with Brian where he finds his inspiration.
